Western & Central Massachusetts This region includes the five western counties of Massachusetts: Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, and Worcester. The area is 4,294 square miles and the population is approximately 1,530,000 (2000 census). The major cities are Springfield (148,000) and Worcester (167,000). Greater Worcester Coin Show, second Sunday, generally monthly in Auburn, admission $1.00 There are regular coin dealers at the Pioneer Valley Flea Market, every Sunday in Holyoke. Western Massachusetts is home of the renowned Brimfield Flea Market held three times a year. They have a dealer locator on the home page that can search for "coins". EXHIBITS, ETC. The Smith College Museum of Art (Northampton) has a small display of coins from Roman Ilium. The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum has an excellent collection of ancient coins which are not necessarily on display. In 2005-2006 the museum had an exhibition entitled "Heads and Tales: Portraits and Propaganda on Classical Coins" that included over 900 coins, primarily Roman. Pekarski's Smoke House (Conway Rd./Route 116 in South Deerfield) has a framed Series 1969D $1 bill signed and autographed by former Treasury Secretary George Schulz, who has a summer home in the area. Pekarski's is "The Home of New England Farm Made Sausage" and specializes in Polish kielbasa, breakfast sausages, and smoked hams and bacon. WHAT'S CIRCULATING?
