Eastern & Northern Connecticut This region includes the state of Connecticut east of the Connecticut River and the northwest corner, including Hartford, Litchfield, New London, Tolland, and Windham Counties. The area is 3,245 square miles and the population is 1,544,189 (2006 estimate). The major cities and towns are Hartford (124,512), New Britain (70,746), Bristol (61,161), West Hartford (60,700), and Manchester (55,650). There are many other small cities with populations of 25,000 or more, especially in Hartford County. Groton (39,431) and New London (25,926) are the major cities in New London County. Torrington (35,903) is the largest city in Litchfield County. The largest town in Windham County is Windham (23,503).
